Have you ever tried baking your own breadsticks (or "grissini" as they are called in Italian) at home? Then it's time to start! With this simple recipe you'll be able to surprise your friends & family by offering them delicious home-made grissini! I have made them with 3 different flavours but you can always try them with onion, Parmesan cheese, oregano and much more! =)
- Preparation time: 2 hours
- Ingredients (for around 50
breadsticks):
500 gr brown flour (or white, depending on your taste)
260 gr water
12 gr brewer's yeast (baking powder)
50 gr extra virgin olive oil
1 and half teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of sugar
Spicy pepper powder
Rosemary
3 Sun-dried tomatoes
3 Black olives
- Preparation:
Put flour, yeast and water in a bowl and mix.
Add sugar, salt and oil and knead till you get an homogeneous dough. If it gets too dry add a
bit of water, while if it gets too humid add a bit of flour.
Divide the dough
in 4 parts (one for each flavour), giving it a rectangular shape and rolling it
out a bit.
In one part, add the spicy pepper powder and roll it out, add some
more powder and re-roll it until you are sure the powder has been homogeneously
distributed. Do the same thing with another part by adding rosemary.
Finally, cut the sun-dried tomatoes and the olives in small pieces and put them
in the third part of the dough. Leave the last part as it is: breadsticks will be plain.
Brush
with a bit of oil and let the four parts of the dough rest at room temperature
for 1 hour.
Afterwards, roll out each part and cut it in stripes. You can roll
each stripe to give it the classic breadstick cylindrical shape, intertwine them
or give them a different shape, also to be able to distinguish the different
flavours once the breadsticks are ready.
Put them on some kitchen foil and bake them at 200°C for 20 minutes.
Let them cool and then…eat them before someone
else eats them all!
Buon appetito!
